Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce Website

The Chamber of Commerce website was a responsive design and development project that became my responsibility midway through it’s execution. Although the interaction and visual design had been mostly completed, the front end development and realization of the custom WordPress theme had barely been started.

I first established a relationship with the client and sought to understand the desired timeline and driving factors behind project milestones. Some of those were not possible and I worked to create understanding about what could be achieved in the available time we had. We then focused on setting up consecutive releases to eventually get the client to the point they wanted to be in an acceptable, if not ideal, time frame.

Then I got to work on the code. Much of the site had been laid out without a grid framework, so I retrofitted the entire site a responsive grid framework. After that I went through each template and insured that it was laid out according to the design comps the client had been provided with. Having done this, the client alerted me to the fact that there were some templating needs for specific pages that had not yet been covered. I designed and coded those templates.

Finally, the calendar app within the WordPress install did not conform to the client’s exact specifications, so I found a new plugin that came close to what the client wanted and with a few tweaks, the calendar was complete.

Lastly, I performed cross browser and device testing on the entire site and made the necessary tweaks. I then trained the client’s marketing staff on standard WordPress usage and showed them how to manage the specific plugins we’d installed and modified to their spec.
